Lululemon’s Response to Founder Chip Wilson’s Concerns on Diversity
Lululemon’s Complex Journey: Navigating Criticisms, Overcoming Challenges, and Embracing Inclusivity
In a recent Forbes interview, Lululemon’s billionaire founder, Chip Wilson, sparked controversy by expressing reservations about having “everybody” wear the brand’s iconic leggings. This isn’t the first time Wilson’s comments have stirred trouble; back in 2013, he stepped down as company chairman amid criticism over yoga pants sheerness and made questionable remarks about women’s bodies.
Despite distancing itself from Wilson over the years, Lululemon has faced ongoing scrutiny. The brand’s efforts to embrace inclusivity through more diverse advertising and extended sizing have been met with criticism from Wilson, who finds fault with the new direction, deeming models “unhealthy” and certain styles “appalling.”
Wilson’s controversial history also includes fatphobic comments and revealing his choice of the brand name with three L’s was to confound Japanese speakers. The brand’s troubles extend beyond public relations, with reports of worker mistreatment at a Bangladesh factory in 2019 and recent allegations of racial discrimination by 14 current and former employees.
Ironically, as Lululemon doubled its revenue to over $8 billion amid a pandemic-driven boom, Wilson’s critiques seem at odds with the company’s success. A company spokesperson emphasized that Wilson no longer represents Lululemon, stating that his views do not align with the company’s values. The statement reiterated Lululemon’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment, reflecting the brand’s evolution since Wilson’s departure in 2015.
